July Blankets

All of our blankets for this month's donation were bright and happy, suitable for summer.

The lady who runs the center said that she's noticed not too many people hand make blankets anymore. Given this, the mommy's receiving our blankets are always very happy! We were pleased to hear such a compliment
:)

New Etsy Items

We have been designing, and knitting, and more designing, and even more knitting. It's been a long process to list new items for etsy, mostly because we start so many projects at a time. This means we'll have a ton of new items finished at once, but with empty spaces in between. Our process can be described as a wave in the ocean. We have one big rush of finished projects, and then there is always a calm when the ocean is making up its mind about what shape, what color, and just how foamy the next wave should be. That's us.

In the Works for our etsy shops are -

blankets, hats, and booties for Double Knit Twins, our baby shop.

blankets, pouches, and cute accessories for Molly Knits, our puppy shop.

shawls, scarves, cowls, and assorted warmies for Posh Knits, our adult shop.

To be able to list any of these items, the rain must relent for our photo shoots to go well. Also, we must purchase a dress form for Posh Knits. I feel as if it is taking an eternity for this wave to come. Our oceanic minds and needles are just taking their time.

Spring FCWS Donations

The First Coast Women's Services had been so pleased with our first donation, that we wanted to make it a monthly habit. They said that 4 or 5 new women choose to keep their babies after coming throughthe facility each month, and we volunteered to keep up with that number.

April-

In April, we experimented with granny squares. This type of blankets is light and airy, great for the hot and humid spring time we have here in Florida. We made them with all types of colors and textures and had a lot of fun in the process.

May-

In May, we decided to give 4 baby sweaters, and we had chosen a pattern written by Elizabeth Zimmerman. EZ, as the knitting community calls her, is famous for her simple way of explaining techniques that would usually be dreaded. We had heard about her from many knitters on Ravelry and in our knitting group, so we decided to purchase the pattern for the "Baby Surprise Jacket" or "BSJ".

We made our first BSJ in January in a self striping yarn that worked out very well. After that, we were hooked. We bought 3 more colorways of this particular yarn and got to work. Of course, there were interruptions in between, but we seamed on the last button in May.

June-

We've been working on a set of blankets to give for June. They are made with classic baby colors, pastels of blue, pink, yellow, and green. We are also making baby booties to match :)
All of the blankets are finished except green, and we only have yellow and green booties to go.

The progressing sets are simply adorable!

here they are! all finished! 6/3/09

Blooms of May

It is apparent that God loves beautiful things- He makes so many of them. On our morning walks with Molly, we pass so many lovely bushes and their stunning blooms. Molly is not quite as awestruck or appreciative. We tried offering her a sniff of a small flower we had picked, and she took a big bite. Well, of course.

The flowers pictured above are our favorite, mostly because of their unique way of blooming. We found out about them on a sunny summer's day. It was a sort of miserable day actually. We were jogging with our sister, although most of the time we were just trying to keep up, huffing and puffing several sidewalk links behind. We stopped for a breather and noticed something different about the shrubs that we had passed many times before. They had sent up a stalk, and exploded with purple flowers!

Every year we find pleasure in the suspense of these mysterious shrubs. We simply cannot contain our anticipation by the time they send up one lonely shoot with one bulb placed neatly on top. A couple weeks pass of this stalk phase and then suddenly, overnight it seems, all of theses bulbs decide to burst open and show their colors. It is such a display all about the neighborhood. We are very impressed. I wonder if we are the only ones who notice this phenomena.

Recycling!

Before this week, we had no idea what fun recycling plastic bags could be! It never occurred to us that we could use them in our crafting, well, not without cutting them into strips and using them for yarn, which we tried and failed, long story. Anyway, one day on etsy, we came across this article , and had an epiphany! *cue angels*

We could use plastic bags as fabric!

When we went for the weekly shopping trip, we kept all of our bags and stored them in our "project basket" to make sure that they would be fused this week. We finally got time, and cut, folded, and ironed our plastic. It turned out a bit wrinkly, but we credited that to being our first try, and gushed over the ideas of what we were going to do with it.

We don't own a sewing machine, so we hand-stitched our first plastic fabric into a little pouch which we soon deemed a coupon holder :)

We sewed on a button, and a little crochet chain for the closure, and it's ready to go!

Vacactions, Vacations

I love Vacations. I love walking by the ocean and watching the footprints appear behind me. I love sitting by the pool and falling asleep in the sunshine. I love waking up to the ocean sunrise right out your window. I love long car trips to knit, and knit, and knit.

We have a party coming up in May, so it was mandatory to sun as much as possible. We inherited our mother's genes of tanning: pale to red to a teeny bit tanner. *repeat* Poor me, must do some more sunning...

We marveled at all the seashells and gathered the choice beauties. We were sure to collect some with holes to experiment with.

It was a wonderful trip.

birds of a feather

Today we were trying to study at our neighborhood bench. Trying. After spotting geese and their goslings, there was absolutely no hope for studying. We had no other option but to creep up and snap a few pictures to share with you guys.

The Mommy and Daddy paraded their 6 fuzzy little babies around the lake, and then took a family swim. :)

We also saw a pair of ducks! They were such a sweet couple, following each other everywhere.

Seeing these two families of birds was a wonderful way to celebrate spring.

FCWS Blankets

We had been accumulating blankets over the past several months, the types of blankets that you knew you had to make the moment you spotted them on ravelry. Sadly, at the time, we had no babies to make them for, but made them anyway.Suddenly one day, it hit us. Our love for babies, and our ability to craft adorable things for them was no coincidence! How could we go all this time without putting the two together? We would help babies in need!
So we decided that we would make 5 girl and 5 boy blankets for our local women's help center. As soon as we finished the tenth blanket, we made a trip up to the center. It was such a nice visit, and we even got to see a young lady pick one out for her son-to-be, Jonathan.
(Wittle Jonathan will be happy to receive the Handsome Spring Blanket when he is born)
